Head makes use of an extended example from a boxer's life, using one man's struggle with the sport to represent all of the abuses that can occur in boxing.

Missing-Subject Fragments: sentences without a subject that need to have a subject connected to the verb or connected by a linking word to another sentence.

Example and Exception Fragments: Examples or exceptions standing alone t need to be connected to an independent clause explaining their relevance.

Prepositional Phrase Fragments: Prepositional phrases not connected to an independent clause need to be connected to an independent clause.

Explain why there are two schools of thought regarding the following question: Is it acceptable to begin a sentence with "but?"

Some people think that because 'but' is a preposition it should only be used to link two ideas together, and a sentence beginning with 'but 'cannot stand on its own. But so long as the exception the 'but' relates to is either implied or present in a nearby sentence, and the speaker's meaning is clear and otherwise grammatically correct, using 'but' can convey an interesting texture to a piece of writing.
