Benchmarking

Do you think benchmarking is just another fad or is it useful for all firms? Why or why not? How could benchmark be used in the nursing field? Does it rate as a viable tool for future development?

Benchmarking is a useful concept for organizations as it defines and elaborates the best practices of an organization and makes them superior among its competitors in establishing a leading position (Coers, Gardner, Raybourn, & Higgins, 2002). It is important in measuring how a person or an organization is serving in order to achieve its targets and retain improvement, which develop as its competitive advantage. Benchmarking also helps in setting goals for others after comparing their processes and outcomes with the bench markers. Although in some cases, benchmarking does not work well. For benchmarking to work, the process must be similar when taken in comparison. Without having similar attributes, you cannot manage and compare the benefits the processes and the outcomes to set new goals. This is what limits the usage of benchmarking and this is where many organizations fail to find it suitable enough for their products or services.
Benchmarking in nursing is similarly useful for the profession or the education itself in following high standards of best practices, which may enhance the professions credibility and sustainability. For nursing, benchmarking can be useful in many ways, which include nutrition, documentation, privacy and dignity, hygiene and safety of the patients. A nurse is personally involved with the patient and strives to keep intact all these aspects for the patient therefore having benchmarks set can benefit the nursing profession in long-term (Peters & McKeon, 1998).

With this in mind, benchmarking can be used as a future developmental tool with respect to enhancing goals and objectives in accordance with the best practices of benchmarking.
