¶ … blew dust off of the book sitting on top of the washing machine, into which I had just dumped a second load of laundry. This was only the first time my mother had entrusted me to take care of the family linens, after she taught me how to measure the detergent, set the buttons on the machine, and pray that nothing shrank. The hardcover book, which read something like Psychology and Modern Man was a relic of higher education. While the first grunts of the washing machine made their way to my ears, I thumbed through the worn out pages of the textbook. Not able to comprehend much of what I read, I brought the book to my dad. "Oh!" He exclaimed. "That's my old college psych textbook!"

Thus began my love affair with the subject. I thereafter gravitated toward psych classes in high school, when we were taught the rudiments of psychological theories like psychoanalysis and perception and cognition. When my junior year came around, my psych teacher kept me after class one day.

Where are you thinking of applying for college?" she asked.

A haven't really thought about it," I replied.

She told me that UT Austin had a great psych program as well as opportunities for a rich, diverse campus life. Because social experiences were just as important to me as social studies, I quickly acquired the application essay for the University. I also visited the UT Austin web site and read more about the psychology department; the more I read the more I wanted to go. I believe my transcript speaks for itself. I know I will contribute to the UT Austin community, through my academic and social work. At the University of Texas I intend to participate as fully as possible in campus life while at the same time performing detailed research and gleaning all I can from my coursework. Thank you for your consideration.

Dust Bowl Bibliography Annotated Bibliography Bonnifield, Matthew Paul. The Dust Bowl: Men Dirt and Depression. University of New Mexico Press, 1979. A journalist named Robert Geiger first coined the term Dust Bowl in the 1930s, which was a decade of extreme droughts, blizzards, tornadoes, dust storms and other climatic changes. Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Kansas and other Plains states bore the brunt of this drought, and Dr. Bonnifield lived through it at the time.

Although the 1930s as a whole for all farmers were marked by dramatic periods of "boom and bust," for the residents of the Triangle, the periods of "boom" were far shorter and crueler (McNeill 40). Indeed, when "Captain John Palliser first reached the prairies he was said he thought he had "discovered Hell" because the region was so arid and desert-like. Still, Palliser noted "a fertile belt surrounding the

When the storm occurs, people are asked to restrict their outdoor activities so they will breathe in the polluted air. The magnitude of impact is directly connected with the intensity of the storm. The more severe ones can cause problems for people going to work and hence can disrupt economic activities. Some of the respiratory problems caused by the YDS can be severe enough to prove fatal. It has

Today, the rocks are in the process of being reduced to sand, but make for an interesting geological study. All of the deserts of the world are different, but have sand, sun, dust, and wind in common. They are often the product of the environments that border them, and prevent rainfall or moisture from reaching them. Geologic studies reveal that these deserts were very different places as recently as 5,000
