Bennett covers an instructional program called Project Transformative Education Achievement Model (TEAM) is used to increase ethic diversity at a Big Ten University (Indiana University), which has a predominately white student base. The author discusses how minorities are under represented as teachers across the nation, and this matches their lower rates for completing high school and college than their white counterparts. Since the 1980s, many programs to encourage and support minorities in their quest for higher education have been created, and many of these programs were geared specifically to encouraging minorities to become educators. Specifically, Project TEAM began in 1996, and this is a discussion of its application at Indiana University, and its success. The Project TEAM recruitment and scholarship program seems to have increased minority enrollment in education at the Bloomington Campus, and the graduation rate is 92%, with 80% of those graduates teaching in public schools. Because of the success at the Bloomington Campus, the program has spread to the Indianapolis and Gary campuses of the University. A survey of students in the program showed most of them found it helpful and supportive. The Project TEAM project seems to be providing a positive educational experience for minorities, and helping more minorities go into education, where they might not have chosen that profession.

Initially, the Project TEAM program seems to be a success, and it has increased the diversity in the School of Education at Indiana University. What is distressing however is that the program is really so very small. Only 15 students are accepted to the program each year, and is as expected, all of these students do not complete the project, or graduate with a degree in Education. The program seems to be a success, but with such a miniscule enrollment, it could be decades before the effects are truly felt in the community, and in the nation. Clearly, more programs like Project TEAM need to be developed and implemented to really make a difference in ethnic education.
