Ethics If this was me in this situation, I would explain what happened, truthfully. There are two main issues here. First is the actual ethical dilemma, and the second is the perceived ethical dilemma. The two issues should be addressed separately. The media at this point is conflating the two issues and that is a mischaracterization of what happened. When the media is creating a story, the key is to understand that they are creating a story and not feed into that fiction. Ethics isn't about optics; it is about what is right and what is wrong.

The first thing is to address the issue of what happened. This has to be the first thing done because the media will ignore it otherwise. The reality is that I can explain my thought processes and analysis carefully. When a politician makes a decision, no matter what that decision, there will have been lobbyists and interest groups that have been in communication attempting to influence that decision. One of the biggest issues here is with perception, that there was no thought process or analysis involved, because that is what people want to assume about politicians. Showing them that there was a thought process and careful analysis counters that narrative.
The second issue here is the deeper perception that there is a link between the party and the policy stance. This perception is a fabrication of the media, but it will resonate with the people. There are two things that need to be communicated here. The first is that I had no idea that these groups were funding the party. The people organizing the party are old friends of mine, not just random lobbyists, and I was under the impression that the party was financed by them personally. It may have been naive for me to think that, but I checked that such an arrangement was legal and I had no idea that they were circumventing that arrangement.
