Eliza becomes increasingly emotional as the story progresses. Because the producers want to build the on-screen chemistry, Act Four is crucial. Eliza loses her temper with Higgins, who reacts with his characteristic coldness. Their mutual anger reveals an underlying tension that can only be resolved by suggesting that the two will be married. The ring offers potent foreshadowing for the resolution of the film. However, Eliza's kissing Freddy (played by a bumbling Hugh Grant) introduces an added dimension of conflict. Hugh Grant is well suited for the one-dimensional character of Freddy: someone not nearly as bright as Eliza. His dullness is offset nicely by the emotional complexity and arrogant intelligence of Henry Higgins. Higgins will begin to appear as being the natural match for Eliza in spite of the degrading way he treats her. Professor Higgins has a good degree of on-screen...

Pickering is also old enough to preclude any realistic sexual tension between the two characters and his role is almost paternal. Eliza's father adds extra comic relief to an already dark romantic comedy. Played by John Cleese, the character of Alfred Doolittle combines slapstick with verbal wit. Moreover, Cleese has the capacity to play the cold, uncaring father. Professor Higgins' mother plays a small but integral role that offsets the more purely physical comedy of Alfred Doolitte. Prunella Scales, who played opposite John Cleese in their classic television series Fawlty Towers, would be another familiar on-screen presence and one that would fulfill the role of an upright society lady perfectly. She also seems to care nominally for Eliza, which is only appropriate for a future mother-in-law.
