Senses

Lesson Steps

Adapted from http://www.kenbakerbooks.com/lessonplansenses.htm

Materials needed: an interesting photograph, a musical instrument, a piece of sandpaper, a soft piece of material, perfume, a piece of candy for each child, enough copies of the five senses handout for each child (http://www.kenbakerbooks.com/lessonplansenses.pdf), Brave Little Monster Book by Ken Baker.

This lesson plan helps children to explore each of the five senses and to label them correctly.

The teacher will pick up each object and explain how it helps with each of the five senses. The teacher will explain how each of the senses works to tell us something about our world. For instance, the sense of sight tells us about everything that they see, give examples. The sense of hearing helps us to distinguish sounds such as music such as whispering, singing and laughing. Touch helps us to determine how things feel, including when something is wrong like pain, heat or cold. Smell tells us about perfume, how are foods taste, when a skunk is around. The sense of taste is caused by the taste buds and tells us how foods taste.

Next, the teacher will read the story Brave Little Monster. As the story is ready, the children will listen to and name when one of the children uses their five senses.
After the story, review how the different senses work and how they are used throughout the story.

SMART Outcome

The student will accomplish correct identification of the course content. They will improve their listening and literacy skill

Adaptations

The student with epilepsy may have to leave the room to take medicine during the lesson. The principles in the lesson are repeated frequently so she should not miss out. The lights in the classroom will have to be of such frequency that they do not trigger seizures, but this should already be addressed by the school.

Assessment

The students should indicate the sense used in Brave Little Monster correctly 3 out of 5 times.
