Andragogy refers to the strategies used in adult learning. This learning strategy enables adult learners to incorporate experience into their studies thus improving adult studies. The concept of andragogy is becoming common in many nations thus referred to as a science that promoted adult understanding and supports education of adults in the long run. The concept is changing since its original use by Alexander Kapp in 1833 from adult education practice to an academic discipline that is different from pedagogy. In the 1950's, Malcolm Knowles contributed to the theory by arguing that adulthood begins when the individual believes himself to be an adult (Boudreau & Twigg, 2011).

Andragogy learning strategy have some advantages in there application to the learning environment. Unlike in pedagogy, there is an immense experience associated with andragogy. The educators can make use of this resource to ensure that the learning environment is improved. Adult learners have a control of the materials taught to them. The students have an understanding of the relevant material due to their experience. Participation is improved in an adult learning environment; the educators also encourage this form of participation to enable the students to learn from one another. The adults can directly see the use of the new information learned in the classroom environment in real life situations. Adult learners are internally motivated to learn compared to the children who are motivated by external motivators. The adults learn to solve problems they may encounter in the workplace. The children learn by increasing the knowledge they have on various issues (Blaschke, 2012).
The implications of this learning theory are that the society's literacy levels increase. Adult education ensures that the living standards in a society improve due to the availability of knowledge. The working environment improves as the adult learner learns information that is applicable in the learning environment. The learning environment is improved as the adults in the classroom environment are resources that the teacher can use to pass information to other students. This form of education is problem centered compared to content-based learning which is time consuming. The learning strategies used by the educator focus on the information required by the adult.

A student may be good in the classroom environment but this does not mean that these skills can be translated in the practical environment. An efficient worker is balanced in the two skills.
